Inspired by SAF: Mini Notecards

Papertrey Ink held a "Stamp-a-Faire Summer Camp" event on July 21st,
highlighting many techniques, videos and tutorials and encouraging  
crafters to enter cards and projects for each of the challenges. Even 
though I had planned to participate, I just didn't get anything finished 
in time for the challenge deadlines!!  I have been highlighting lots of 
projects inspired by the Stamp-a-Faire videos and techniques this week. 
I hope you have enjoyed looking back at some of these fun challenges.

There were so many great examples of card sets from the Papertrey Ink design team members for this challenge, but I was really fascinated by the mini cards made by Danielle Flanders in this blog post.  Even though I didn't have the Half and Half die she used to make her cards, I managed to duplicate these with some of my supplies.

The finished size of each card is 2" x 2 3/8".

Five colours were chosen and the details repeated on each one.

Lemon Tart

 Polka Dot Basics was stamped on the front and back of the white card stock.
A Dotted Scallop border punch was used along the bottom front edge and then a score line was made just above the dotted section.

Orange

 The tags were cut with Tiny Tags star die from the various colours. Each one was stamped with the matching colour, using a small flourish stamp. Rustic Jute twine was coloured with a copic marker (C9) and then wrapped around the upper portion of the card two times. The tag was attached and tied with a bow. In order to hold the star in place, I used a dot of foam adhesive.

Hibiscus Burst

 Black ink was used to stamp the sentiment.

Spring Moss

Each card fits neatly into a mini envelope - the Lunchbox Note Die was cut from Vellum. Each side was stitched with matching thread to create the pocket.

Aqua Mist

Mini Cards were tucked into Vellum envelopes.

Packaging

 I made a little box to hold the mini card set. The finished size of box is 3" wide; 2" high; 3/4" depth. Five note cards/envelopes fit nicely into this size.

Start with a 4 1/2" x 4 3/4"  True Black piece of card stock; embossed with Swiss Dots folder.
On the 4 3/4" length -  score 2 " in from each side. This will leave a 3/4" center that will become the bottom of the box.
On the 4 1/2" section, score 3/4" from each edge. This will become the vertical sides of the box and leave a 3" wide front and back.

Embellishment Details
I cut the coloured card stock from the star die (Tiny Tags) and stamped them in the same way as the note card stars. The last star was cut from white card stock and stamped with the pattern and sentiment from the Tiny Tags stamp set. Each star was tied to the white Baker's Twine with a piece of silk thread.

This might be fun to give out on New Year's Eve and ask everyone to write down one wish for the upcoming year. Or it could be used for someone celebrating a birthday - each person attending could write down a wish they have for the birthday guy or gal!! I really enjoyed making these mini cards and have a few other ideas for using this design in the future.

Inspired by SAF: Tie Dye Techniques

Nichole Heady outlined a variety of techniques to create background papers that resemble a 'tie-dye' effect. I chose to make papers using the  Shaving Foam Technique.i don't have many re-inkers for this method so I used yellow and green food colouring and a Crystal Blue re-inker (Close To My Heart).

Here's the final result of the various papers 

that I made with this technique. What fun!!

I made 2 cards with the papers - one uses the paper as a background and the other uses some of the paper in die cut details. With some of the left over paper I cut out some leaves with my (new to me) Leaf Prints dies. I hope to use them on other projects in the future!

 

Card #1: Day Dreamer

Rustic White card stock (SU) was used as the card base and then the tie-dye panel was mounted onto the base.

Sentiment Panel

The sentiment panel was made to resemble one of the Half and Half dies, by partially cutting the curved tip of a Nestabilities Label #9 die and then hand cutting the sides. I stamped the sentiment (Daydreamer) onto this panel with Twilight ink and then added the vines (Just for You) in Sunny Yellow and the green dots (Harvest Berries) in Clover Meadow. Rustic Jute twine was looped several times and a yellow star button was tied to the loopy bow; then mounted on the top of the panel.

Interior

The larger frame from Framed Out #5 was inked with yellow and green inks. The interior frame, arrow and sentiment were stamped with Twilight ink.

Card #2: Lovely Layers Anniversary Card

I started with a card base made from Stamper's Select White. The front of the card was embossed using the Cuttlebug D'vine Swirls Embossing folder.The sentiment panel was created with one of the Photo Finishers die and stamped with Clover Meadow ink using the sentiment from Pretty Peonies. Three amber rhinestones accent one side of the sentiment.

The focal panel was made by cutting a green and white square with Nestabilities: Classic Squares. The white layer was embossed around the edges.
 The patterned paper was used as the leaf layer from Lovely Layers die collection and then the leaf veins were stamped on top of the pattern.
The next layer was die cut from green card stock and embossed with white embossing powder.
The flowers were also die cut and then stamped with Sunny Yellow and Clover Meadow inks. All of these layers were mounted with foam adhesives to give lots of dimension.

Inspired by SAF:: Friendship Bracelets

Nichole Heady showed how we could use paper supplies to make Beaded Friendship Bracelets. She used a special paper pad and dies to create the beads, but since I didn't have these I used this tutorial and template and from a 2008 blog post. 

 This was the last challenge that I completed as it required a few steps. 
I stamped computer paper with Background Basics: Medallions using Raspberry Fizz and Summer Sunrise. The paper was trimmed according to the template.

I made 30 beads - all identical, and then sealed them with clear nail polish.

I visited a local bead shop to look for co-ordinating beads and accessories (pink and white beads). I also found some silver flowers and end caps for the bracelet, as well as the clasp, crimp beads and jump rings. Since I have never made jewellery before, this was a real learning experience for me!!

I made 3 bracelets, but still have supplies to make a few more!! I used 5 paper beads for the first bracelet along with the pink and white beads and silver accents.
I found that it was a little short, so 6 paper beads were used on the remaining two bracelets.

Here's a close up of some of the details. The paper beads are fairly light because of the white background. I would definitely recommend a darker paper for future bead projects, so that the designs would be more noticeable.





And finally .... three bracelets ready to wear. These would be fun for a group of young friends....
I'm thinking my nieces might enjoy these!! Several of them are very 'crafty', so I know they would appreciate them.

The Limited Supplies Challenge provided a list of papers, stamps and embellishment that could be included on a card design.   
     STAMPS: Natural Beauties only (or another floral set as a substitute if needed
     INKS:  any inks you prefer.

I did not have the Natural Beauties stamp set at the time I made this card, so I substituted Botanical Silhouettes as the floral set. 

I ran into some problems when I tried to incorporate a sentiment from this set. I "wandered" from the challenge a bit when I pulled out the circle stamp from Just for You and the focal sentiment from Framed Out #1.  This panel was mounted onto a scalloped circle of Simply Chartreuse.

(SU Embosslits Beautiful Wings) 

from white card stock and then inked with Lemon Tart, Harvest Gold and Summer Sunrise to create the colour variation.

 I repeated the stamped flowers along the left edge of the card interior and added a sentiment from Big Birthday Wishes.

I've always wanted to make a mini album and this challenge presented the ideal opportunity. I actually finished my album in September, after I had completed several of the other SAF projects. One of the things that really inspired my 'theme' came about after making Handmade Embellishments described by Heather Nichols here. You'll see a few of my stitched felt circle badges throughout the album and later on when I post all of my projects from that challenge.

My mini album highlights pictures of Gingerbread Houses and Cookie Trees from previous Christmas celebrations. Many of these were taken before the digital camera era, so the quality isn't the best, but I decided to incorporate what I had. I used many of the elements from Heather Nichols'  mini album tutorial.  

I started by cutting Kraft card stock with the Tabbed Mini Book Page. Each page was outlined with faux stitching using a white gel pen. I knew my main colour scheme was going to be red and green, so I chose the gingham and bitty dot papers from the Pure Poppy Pattern Pack and Cottage Ivy ink (Memento) to stamp a green 'gingham' paper (Background Basics: Gingham).

Every layout uses an image from Postmarks with 

the appropriate year (Mini Scrapbook Series: Library Ledger). 

The front and back covers were cut from chipboard and covered with Pure Poppy gingham papers. Green and red accents were added: Stamping Bella Dots and Donuts and 2 strips of scallops on the top of the page (Heart Border Die)

The house (Waltzingmouse Stamps: Sewing Box Hugs) was stamped onto a variety of papers with Fresh Snow ink and then embossed with white embossing powder. I then paper pieced all of the details and mounted this onto many layers of paper and card stock.  I also wanted to use elements from the Friendship Jar series, especially the Holiday Fillers. The title Homemade Gingerbread was stamped in Kraft ink.

page.  Holly Jolly dies were used to create the embellishment.

There were a variety of ribbon techniques presented but the one that really caught my attention was Betsy Veldman's Bitty Dot Ribbon Flowers.

It certainly was an interesting adventure when I brought out the candle and matches to 'melt' my ribbons!! My husband thought I had really lost it!!

I only had the Bitty Dot ribbon in Winter Wisteria, so I added the 

yellow satin ribbon from my stash to create the other 2 flowers.

Small adhesive pearls were added to the center of the flowers.

Nichole Heady introduced the day with a Make and Take card project using the floral set: Natural Beauties. (view video here) . I didn't have this set at the time, so I used the large floral image from Pretty Peonies.

Card #1:

Dots (Fillable Frames #11) were stamped in Summer Sunrise 

and the dandelions (Botanical Silhouettes) in Harvest Gold. 

Yellow pearl accents and a Vellum sentiment panel.

The inside of the card was stamped with sentiments from

 Movers and Shakers Sentiments and Pretty Peonies.  The 

small peony was stamped, then coloured with copic markers.

Card #2:

I wasn't happy with the first card, so I ended up making a 

second one.Maybe that's why I take so long to create projects!!

Dots were stamped with Canyon Clay and 

the  small flowers with Summer Sunrise.

Pink pearl accents and a Vellum Sentiment Panel.
